Visiting Tundra Swans

About this photo

In early January 2018, I was fortunate to spot some fascinating white birds among the collection of ducks in the shallows near Keuka College. I captured several shots, and went back to get more!

The birds turned out to be Tundra Swans, visiting our area during migration. We later saw more near Branchport. The swans are fun to watch, as they dabble in shallow water feeding on lake vegetation and adopting some interesting positions. If you look closely you may find ice crystals on some of them.

With spring, they have returned to their breeding grounds in northern Canada, but we hope to see them again next year!
